Our 7 Favorite Fall Activities for Families

Colorful Fall Pumpkins

The smell of pumpkin spice is in the air. Leaves are turning golden orange. Sweater weather. It must be fall.

For many of us, it’s the last chance to enjoy a comfortable day outdoors before the brutal Midwest winter. Here are some of our favorite, family-friendly things to do in fall.

1. Get lost in a Corn Maze

There’s nothing more Midwest than a cornfield! Fall is the best time to visit a local farm and check out their maize maze. While you’re there, you can pick up a few pumpkins for painting or carving.

2. Carve Pumpkins

Decorate and display them on the front porch. Painting pumpkins can be a fun way to get everyone involved, without the mess or sharp tools. If carving is more your style, don’t just toss the pumpkin guts straight into the compost bin - try roasting the seeds for a healthy snack.

3. Go Apple Picking

Find a pick-your-own grower and enjoy a beautiful day in the orchard. You can’t beat the first crisp bite of a fresh apple, but there is plenty more you can do with your haul. Try baking a tasty apple crumble or setting up a caramel apple dessert station that everyone will love.

  • Check if your city has a nonprofit gardening group that maintains fruit trees, and volunteer to help harvest!

4. Take a Walk in the Park

Get out and explore a park. Fall temperatures are great for hiking and biking. Plus, you’re sure to see some beautiful views.

5. Fall Color Tour

The best thing about autumn is seeing all the trees change colors. Take a winding drive through the countryside and soak up the scenery. Lush green forests transform into a mosaic of stunning gold, orange and red. You may even spot that perfect maple tree to make the backdrop of your next photo session.

6. Update Family Photos

Everyone looks better in the golden hues of fall. Find some coordinating plaids and get snapping. Hire a professional or have fun with selfies. You’ll be glad you took the time to preserve these moments. These photos may even make a wonderful family Christmas card.

7. Visit your local Farmer’s Market

Most Midwest farmer’s markets end their delicious runs in October. Stop by your local market one last time before the season ends, and enjoy a warm drink while you stroll.
